Frequently asked questions

Can technology prevent falls?

Detection and prevention are different things. A system that detects a fall shortens the time before someone reaches the resident; it does not stop the fall happening. Prevention depends on assessment, care planning, staffing and the environment. The honest role for technology is to reduce the time a resident spends on the floor and to give the care team a record of what happened.

How accurate is fall detection?

Published accuracy figures in this category are difficult to compare, because the large majority of studies behind them use simulated falls rather than real unwitnessed ones. Field performance is generally lower than headline numbers suggest. When evaluating any system, ask which conditions the figure was measured under and whether the falls were real.

Why does time to detection matter more than the alert itself?

The interval between a fall and someone finding the resident is often the difference between a survivable event and a serious one. In many communities that interval is set by how often rounds happen, not by any system. Measuring it, and being able to show it afterwards, is what changes both the clinical outcome and the record.

What happens after a fall is detected?

The event is raised with the resident identified and their location attached, routed to the caregivers responsible, and escalated if nobody acknowledges. Acknowledgement, response and resolution are recorded, which gives the clinical team something to review and the operator an auditable account of the response.

Does fall detection require a camera in the room?

Not in this approach. Fall awareness comes from a wearable device and ambient sensing rather than video, so there is no image produced and no footage to review. That keeps coverage possible in bathrooms and bedrooms, and it changes what has to be agreed with residents and families.

What should we ask a vendor about fall detection?

Ask what proportion of alerts turn out to be actionable, how many notifications a caregiver receives per shift, whether accuracy figures come from real or simulated falls, and what the response record looks like after an event. The measurement method matters more than the headline figure.
